Viewing strategies
Develop active viewing skills by using an adaptation of the Time To Read 5-Step Reading Process as you watch the CNN Student News stories.
Before Viewing
- Select a story to view.
- Use the story title and description to talk about what you and your mentor already know about the topic.
- Brainstorm and discuss vocabulary you and your mentor associate with the topic.
- Pose questions and make predictions about the story.
During Viewing
- Try pausing the video to ask questions and discuss what you have seen and heard; continue viewing using this "watch and pause to discuss" technique.
- Stop the video, rewind and watch a particular portion or the whole segment again. You'll be able to see and hear things you didn't catch before. Together analyze, interpret, and evaluate how and what information is being communicated. Some things to look for as you watch include:
- the use of special sound and graphic effects
- the pacing and the transitions from one shot and or speaker to another
- the angle or direction of the camera shots
- the people interviewed, their title and point of view
After Viewing
- Discuss what you and your mentor have seen and heard and connections between your own experiences and the topic.
- Review the answers to the questions you raised before viewing and talk about what else you and your mentor would like to know about the topic.
- Talk about where to find additional information - good sources include libraries, Time magazine's Web site www.time.com and CNN's Web site www.cnn.com.
